Breeding and Restoring the Next Generation American Elm

Iconic tree species include those native trees that once dominated the typical American city landscape. The American elm and chestnut are the first two that come to mind, and now ash trees are similarly under significant threat of loss. The USDA Forest Service and partner organizations across the country have been working to conserve, breed, and test new selections of American elm in the landscape. In this webinar, speakers will share how they are working to potentially restore these iconic species and the ecological niche they once filled. Carrie Pike will introduce the breeding process and practice, including how to be a good partner in finding and testing potential selections. Leila Pinchot and Charlie Flower will present current research and specific testing efforts in place in multiple cities across the U.S.
