Water Quality & Consumption

Filoli is a country house set in 16-acres of formal gardens surrounded by a 654-acre estate located in Woodside, California. Filoli evaluates and adopts new irrigation technologies developed by the industry to improve efficiencies in water use. Garden staff use historical evapotranspiration data from the State of California to set irrigation schedules. Along with close monitoring by staff, this ensures water is used in the appropriate quantities and applied in a manner for efficient distribution. They also have three wells on their property and use well water blended with municipal water for garden irrigation. Their wells are seasonal and are pumped and carefully managed to allow for recharge during the dry season. By prolonging use of well water, they are able to reduce use of municipal water for irrigation.

Staff and public education is also important to ensure water-wise gardening. Filoli utilizes programs from accredited institutions for staff professional development, such as the certificate program at California Polytechnic (Cal Poly) San Luis Obispo's Irrigation Institute. Filoli has implemented water buffer zones for any application of herbicides/pesticides based on regulations. Staff will not spray or utilize a non-approved substance in water buffer zones. During drought periods, Filoli uses interpretive signage to educate the public on how the gardens are adapting to water restrictions.
