July 2025 – Beginning July 2025, the Scott Arboretum has a new name: Scott Arboretum & Gardens. In celebration of our 15 distinct gardens and to help us communicate to a broader audience the horticulture delights we have to share, educate, and inspire the public, the name Scott Arboretum & Garden reflects our myriad horticulture displays.

An arboretum (pronounced are – bore – E – tum) is a botanical garden devoted to trees. To that end, the Scott Arboretum boasts over 4,000 accessioned trees, and 157 of those are now designated as Heritage Trees. Yet, since our founding in 1929, the Scott Arboretum has also been known as a “garden of ideas.” We curate 15 distinct gardens throughout our 350 acres to showcase achievable gardening techniques to visitors.

Throughout 2025, you will slowly see the change reflected in publications, digital media, and garden signage. Plan your visit today to explore our gardens and trees.

The Scott Arboretum & Gardens, a unique “garden of ideas”, encourages horticulture in its broadest sense through displays on the 425-plus acre campus of Swarthmore College. We offer some of the region’s most intimate, authentic, and accessible horticultural experiences. The Arboretum is frequently ranked among the most beautiful campuses in the world.

Free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, 365 days year, stop by to experience our “gardens of ideas.”
