Public gardens and arboreta are increasingly reliant not only on membership and earned revenues, but on leadership-level philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and foundations. These kinds of major gifts typically are complex and require the cooperation of multiple players – development staff, the Director or CEO, senior program staff and board members. Typically, however, organizations act as if gifts are the work of one person – the “rainmaker,” the “rock star,” the “stemwinder.” Today’s donors are looking for creative approaches and real impact – things that require a fresh perspective on collaboration and the partnership between director, program staff, development, and board leaders.
