IDEA Café: Replacing Token Representation with a Culture of Allyship

Many organizations seek to implement IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) initiatives by diversifying representation through hiring or bringing onboard individuals who represent the ethnic group, gender, or age group they lack within the organization. But if that effort stops at onboarding, the result can become an empty, symbolic, or superficial gesture of change. This is what is meant by "tokenism." The result can be harmful to the organization and devastating to the individual.

Join panelists, Dr. Jandel Allen-Davis, M.D., President and CEO of Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado; and Dr. Thomas Easley, Ed.D., Assistant Dean of Community and Inclusion at the School of the Environment at Yale University as we discuss ways to shift behaviors from token representation to creating a culture of allyship in our pursuit of lasting change.

Hosted by Association's IDEA Committee and moderated by Co-Chair of IDEA Committee and Public Garden Leader, Mae Lin Plummer.
