June: Fire Safety Preparedness

Welcome to our month-by-month Disaster Readiness Calendar!

Severe weather can happen at any time, in any part of the country -- and they can cause fire risks.

That's why it is important for your public garden or arboretum to understand the fire risks that can come with these weather changes.

Wildfires are unplanned fires that burn in natural areas like forests, grasslands or prairies. These dangerous fires spread quickly and can devastate not only wildfire and natural areas, but also communities.

You may be surprised to learn that besides wind and water damage, severe weather also brings the risk of fire. Fire can occur as a result of:

  • Lightning
  • Leaking gas lines, damaged propane tanks and leaking vehicle gas tanks
  • Debris near electrical wires and transformers
  • Damaged or downed utility lines
  • Exposed electrical outlets and wiring

Get Wildfire Ready!

Preparing for wildfires or fires caused by severe weather means following some important steps:

  • Recognize warnings and alerts

  • Make an emergency plan
  • Review important documents
  • Strenghten your facility
  • Have an evacuation plan
  • Have a plan for staying safe

In June -- and all year -- don't let wildfires impact your business and garden plans. Preparedness is key!
