Job Description

Featuring a 60-acre naturalistic garden set among 1,000 acres of pristine meadows and woodland, Winterthur represents the artistic vision and life’s work of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969). As an example of the “wild garden” style first made popular in late 19th-century England, the Winterthur garden is notable among American public gardens for the sophistication of its aesthetic composition, its size and scale, and the age and rarity of its plant collections. In addition to its historic garden, Winterthur boasts one of the finest museums of American decorative art in this country, competitive graduate programs in art conservation and material culture studies, and a preeminent research library.
Since its inception in 1991, Winterthur’s horticulture internship program seeks to preserve and maintain this unique property while cultivating the next generation of horticulturists and environmental stewards. Internships are full-time, paid positions and include free housing on the property. During the summer months, interns participate in special trainings, take plant identification classes, and visit some of the region’s major horticultural and environmental destinations.

The Horticulture Intern will learn and apply excellent horticultural techniques while working one-on-one with horticulture staff in order to preserve and maintain the historic design intent of the Winterthur Garden and Estate.
