Pay scale & grade WG 09

Salary $27.95 to $32.68 per hour

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol; Office of the Chief Operating Officer; Office of the Facility Manager, Supreme Court Buildings and Grounds; Operations and Maintenance Division; Grounds Branch. Applies horticultural technology, gardening, engineering equipment operation, and grounds keeping skills to maintains the optimum appearance and health of the exhibits and floral displays, grass, interior and exterior ornamental plants, landscape design, shrubs, and trees.

Core Hours: 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. with the option of an Alternative Work Schedule.

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE - INCLUDES WEEKENDS, EVENINGS, AND HOLIDAYS ON A REGULAR AND RECURRING BASIS. ROTATING SHIFT WORK MAY ALSO BE REQUIRED AT MANAGEMENT'S DISCRETION.
This position is essential--Employee is required to report to work during emergencies and inclement weather situations

Duties & Responsibilities 

The incumbent is a Gardener (Advanced) and applies horticultural technology, gardening, engineering equipment operation, and grounds keeping skills to develop and enhance the Supreme Court Buildings and Grounds interior and exterior superior floral appearance.

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

Control of Plant Diseases, Insects, and Weeds

Recognizes unusual plant diseases. Applies proper treatment to alleviate the conditions. Records corrective procedures used.

Measures and applies fertilizer and chemical control agents.

Plant Cultivation and Displays

Designs and creates displays and exhibits of plants throughout the Supreme Court Buildings and Grounds. Performs the entire range of tasks that support the planning for and creation of displays of varieties of flowers, grasses, ground covers, shrubs, and trees. Ensures that plants are healthy, well grown, and the display areas are clean and orderly.

Initiates and coordinates plant displays involving the propagation and cultivation of unusual and exotic plants, shrubs, and trees. Maintains and cares for displays of interior subtropical, tropical, and arid plants and trees. Plants and preserves trees, shrubs, hedges, flowers, gardens, and lawns for the exterior historical landscape of our Nation's Supreme Court.

Reproduces plants through cuttings, rooting, grafting, and layering processes.

Horticulture Practices and Grounds keeping

Prunes and trims plants and shrubs to maintain good plant health and treat unusual plant conditions. Mows and maintains lawn grasses. Cleans up and removes fall leaf accumulations using hand tools, vacuums, blowers, and sweepers.

Removes trash, debris, and weeds from assigned areas.

Clears snow and ice from sidewalks and steps to provide for safe conditions.

Education and Experience

You must be able to pass a drug test.

You must possess and maintain an unexpired state driver's license.
APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS AND MAINTAIN A VALID AND UNEXPIRED STATE DRIVER'S LICENSE AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

The selectee MUST possess a valid, unexpired D.C. Pesticide Applicator's License in Categories 3A, 3B, and 3C.

Be registered to apply pesticides under the direction of a licensed pesticide applicator within 90 days of the effective date of employment. The employee must obtain a pesticide applicator's license within 24 months of the effective date of appointment.
