The University of Washington Botanic Gardens (UWBG) mission statement is “Sustaining managed to natural ecosystems and the human spirit through plant research, education and display.” With more than 320 acres of gardens and natural areas in the heart of Seattle, UWBG is home to internationally significant plant collections, award-winning restoration ecology and conservation programs, and popular public programs serving youth, adults, and professionals. UWBG has two sites: the Washington Park Arboretum (WPA) and the Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH). WPA is in the top five national arboreta and botanic gardens collections in maples, magnolias, Pine family, hollies, mountain ash, oaks and viburnums.
The UW Botanic Gardens has an outstanding opportunity for a Field Arborist.
Under the direct supervision of WPA Grounds Supervisor, the Field Arborist position performs skilled arboricultural and horticultural duties, requiring knowledge and experience in aerial operations; including technical climbing, tree pruning, tree removal, bracing/cabling, conducting tree inspections, tree risk assessments and appraisals. The Arboriculture program is currently led by a team of two Field Arborist positions.
Aerial Tree Activities (approx. 35% Field Arborist team*): Climb trees to perform arboriculture needs such as tree removals, pruning, bracing/cabling, inspections, etc., using free climbing with ropes and saddle as per ANSI (American National Standards Institute) A300 and Z133 standards for tree care operations. If requested, lead horticulture ground support staff while performing aerial tree care. Includes weekly work planning and scheduling with Grounds Supervisor; may include training, review of safety procedures and checking work of horticulture staff assisting in aerial tree operations. May also schedule and assign work, direct, and inspect the work of contractors, interns, students and volunteers involved in aerial tree care activities. May perform bucket truck and other lift device operations. May coordinate and implement aerial tree activities with UW Campus Grounds and Seattle Parks and Recreation tree crews.
*Field Arborist team alternates ground duties associated with all aerial tree operations.
Ground-Based Tree Care (approx. 25%): Perform ground activities for tree operations that include removals, pruning, staking, cabling, bracing and inspections. Lead horticulture staff, if assisting arborist(s), when performing ground-based duties. Other arboriculture operations and practices may include, but not limited to:
• Perform remediation of compacted and poorly drained soils, cultivation and use of organic mulches;
• Monitor, document, and conduct follow-up operations for tree hazards;
• Determine general tree care needs outside of hazard tree management, i.e. pruning, pest management, soil management, etc.;
• Assist in general tree care needs other than hazard tree management such as pruning, pest management, soil management, etc.;
• Obtain arborist quotes and coordinate contract work for large jobs as needed;
• Construction planning and contractor oversight for tree and root zone protection and other construction impacts to trees;
• Conduct tree risk assessments
• Survey, evaluate, and appraise trees to assist in project development;
• Conduct regular SOP’s safety training with horticulture staff in various arboricultural ground operations.
• Weed management: mechanical weed removal, also apply herbicides; apply arborist chips as a mulch to landscape beds and tree rings; apply granular and liquid fertilizers; set up and operate manual sprinklers for irrigation of new plantings, may assist with minor irrigation repairs and maintenance, including irrigation scheduling;
• Planting and transplanting: install container, bareroot and balled and burlapped trees and shrubs, and may plant seed and transplants for seasonal color;
• Landscape plant grooming: remove leaf and debris and groom display beds;
• Application of horticultural chemicals: apply herbicides, insecticides and fungicides and other materials as prescribed in UWBG’s IPM program;
• Brush clearing: remove woody brush and invasive plants, plus, if needed, herbicide control methods and other site restoration practices;
• may install and maintain interpretive signs, benches, fencing, rockwork;
• Landscape renovation: prepare sites, including soil and plant installation, trail work, rock installation and the ability to follow written prints and instructions;
• Use of manual tools and equipment: use rakes, hand edger, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, weeding forks, hoes, pruning shears, and pesticide sprayers;
• Operation and routine maintenance of power equipment: operate and perform routine maintenance on equipment such as trucks, utility vehicles, tractors, backhoe, chainsaws, brush chipper, stump grinder, air-compressor w/ “Air-Spade”, skid-steer and attachments, sprayers, and all types of other hand-held power equipment as needed.
Ambassadorship: Lead tours and providing public outreach for visitors to the UW Botanic Gardens as well as may support teaching and instruction of academic and public outreach plant management classes, may give public presentations related to arboriculture or horticulture.
Record Keeping: with training, submit plant condition and dead plant reports and other horticulture records; enter in computerized database; map new plantings via GIS technology or other methods.
Direct the work of others: May lead groups and individual volunteers, including community service projects related to arboriculture and horticulture programs.
Perform related duties as required.
Physical ability to do required work AND two years of experience as a Gardener or equivalent work involving grounds maintenance, plant care and landscape construction OR
Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience as stated above AND one year of college level training in botany, horticulture, forestry, landscape, irrigation or allied field
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Two years of experience as an arborist in the tree care industry and experience as a horticulturist. Demonstrated ability to climb trees with a rope and saddle. Associate degree (or greater) or equivalent training in arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, or related plant science. ISA Tree Risk Assessor Certification (TRAQ), Basic Level Tree Appraisal class. Bucket truck aerial lift training and certification. Possession of a valid Washington State Public Operators Pesticide Control license (or ability to obtain within 6 months of start of employment). Possession of a valid driver’s license to operate work vehicles. College level training in botany, horticulture, forestry, landscape, irrigation, or allied field can substitute for one year of horticultural experience.
Conditions of Employment: Possession of a valid International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist or equivalent certification. Willingness to work outdoor in varying weather. Must demonstrate climbing abilities. Able and willing to work occasional weekend days, which will occur with a minimum of two-week notice and require an adjusted week’s schedule. No overtime. Regular business hrs: M-F, 7a-3:30p nominal.
