Job Description 

The University of Michigan, Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum is looking for one full-time temporary (9 month, 2 term limited) Facilities Technician. The Facilities Technician will report to the Facilities Manager and will help with the development, maintenance and management of our buildings, hardscapes and grounds to support teaching, research, public outreach, and conservation goals. This position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday with occasional weekend and evening responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities 

*Inspection and monitoring of buildings, infrastructure, systems, hardscapes and grounds
*Student intern oversight and scheduling grounds work (Mowing, aeration, trash collection, trimming, weeding)
*Routine cleaning and organizing, power washing, painting, and light repairs
*On-site coordination with Plant Operations personnel
*Minor construction, carpentry, general repairs and landscaping.
*Maintain a variety of building systems and equipment.
*Project management assistance.
*Coordinate the property disposition process.
*Lead student interns, work-study students, and volunteers.
*Ability to lift or transport up to 40lbs.

Education and Experience 

Required Qualifications*
*Associate's degree or higher in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
*Experience in any of the following industries: construction, building services, transportation and infrastructure, environmental health and safety, horticulture, landscaping, or public gardens.
*Will be asked to work in multiple conditions and tolerate the physical challenges of working on building systems, in greenhouses and outdoors.
*Strong written and verbal communication skills.
*A valid Driver's License and ability to pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) check is required.

Desired Qualifications*
*Experience with any of the following: greenhouse systems, irrigation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, road maintenance, landscape equipment, outdoor water features, project assistance, carpentry, construction, historic buildings, conservatory collections, large equipment and trucks, sustainable systems, regenerative thinking, and responsible waste management.
*Familiarity with general computer applications (Microsoft Office, Google suite)
*Previous leadership and supervisory experience working with students and volunteers
