The U.S. Forest Service (FS) United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) seeks highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Assistant Director for Urban and Community Forestry Programs. This position offers a unique opportunity to help lead the Cooperative Forestry staff, working with States, private landowners, and other partners to promote healthy forests and livable communities throughout the United States. The position is located in the Forest Service national headquarters in Washington, DC and organizationally located in the Cooperative Forestry staff within the State & Private Forestry Deputy Area. The Assistant Director (AD) provides technical leadership, supervision, guidance, policy development, active planning and coordination for national level programs.
The position provides staff leadership for strategic planning and the full range of leadership responsibilities in Cooperative Forestry programs which are all national in scope. It entails nationally recognized expertise in program management, policy development, communications, coordination and supervision/leadership. Duties also include representing urban and community forestry programs by serving on and/or leading several boards, councils, and working teams.
The position requires strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written), teamwork, and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment. The position oversees the management of a $32 million budget, directs policy for national programs, leads a highly skilled and motivated team, and is part of the Cooperative Forestry leadership team, working in partnership with other Assistant Directors to lead in the work environment and foster the agency core values of: safety, diversity, conservation, service and interdependence.
