Job Details
Under general supervision of the Senior Museum Scientist (Garden Manager), the incumbent is responsible for maintaining and improving the living collections of the Botanical Garden; is responsible for the care and maintenance of assigned Garden zone(s); assists in the maintenance of the Garden landscape and its features; responsible for day-to-day horticultural operations; will work with the Garden Manager and Assistant Director to develop and implement volunteer program and policies; help conduct tree work and assess plant and tree health in collections; monitor pesticides/herbicides needs to be used in the garden; will be trained to use and update the Garden database (IrisBG); identify species in the garden, propagate and maintain plants from various ecosystems; will work on weekends and most campus holidays; assist Garden Manager and Assistant Director with other Garden projects or tasks when needed (such as events, etc.)
Job Duties:
•Maintain and improve health of plants in the living collection, including pruning, fertilization, and plant and pest management.
•Responsible for the care and maintenance of assigned Garden zone; assist in the design, construction, and maintenance of the Garden landscape and its features.
•Assist in an ongoing program for labeling new plantings as well as identifying and labeling
current unlabeled species in the garden.
•Assess tree health in collections and maintain the data-base IrisBG.
•Propagate plants to be added to or duplicated for the living collection in the garden
Qualifications:
•Possess a Certificate/Degree in Horticulture and Gardening and/or the equivalent in
professional horticultural and botanical horticulture experience.
•General knowledge of basic botany, including planting structure, life cycles,
and categories of vascular plants.
•Strong working knowledge of proper cultural methods for common and unusual non-native
plants.
•Working knowledge of hardscape landscape construction and irrigation.
•Able to perform daily physical labor in varied conditions.
