We want visitors and members to come to Tyler to not only “unplug” and enjoy nature, but to leave with the inspiration and hands-on experience they need to become better stewards of the natural world as they apply their newfound knowledge at home.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Position Description:
As the Edible Gardener, your primary responsibilities will be:

Horticulture
• Designing, scheduling, and planting the crops for the Edible Garden on a year-round basis.
• Growing and/or procuring materials required for the crops, including but not limited to seeds, plants, and soils.
• Watering, pruning and harvesting the garden each season.
• Managing the garden perimeter and 1.5-acre landscape.
• Servicing all Edible Garden equipment and machinery.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Community Engagement
• Collaborating with the Outreach and Education departments to determine which crops are needed for educational programming and/or assist with facilitating an educational program for members and visitors.
• Interacting with visitors on a daily basis ranging from informal Q&A sessions to blogs, videos and social media posts.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Volunteer Management
• Ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for staff, volunteers and visitors by coordinating building maintenance requests (e.g. facility cleaning, re-stocking of supplies, safety inspections, etc.).
• Supervising and coordinating weekly schedules for up to 12-15 garden volunteers.
• Ensuring produce donations to local food banks occur on a timely basis.
• Other duties, as assigned.

Work Environment:
• Requires frequent and prolonged equipment use, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, pulling, twisting and climbing.
• Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Hours:
• The standard work schedule will be Monday – Friday from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.
• Applicants must have the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, particularly during Tyler’s peak event season (May – October).

Education and Experience 

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree or Certification in horticulture, environmental science or related field is preferred (or at least two years of proven experience in a similar role).
• In-depth knowledge of edible plants as well as horticulture, growing and sustainable practices is a plus.
• Friendly personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
• A desire to work with the general public.
• Valid state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license and insurability.
• Valid PA Pesticide Applicator’s license or ability to obtain one.
• A working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Well organized, creative and able to effectively communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Have a passion for nature and people as well as a creative eye and attention to detail.
• Have effective time management skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
