Job Description 

Tudor Place Historic House & Garden seeks a full-time Gardener. This position is a great opportunity to gain exposure to all facets of public garden specialties including plant collections, nursery management, arboriculture, natural lands, outdoor/indoor display, and educational programming. The Gardener is a critical member of a small team of staff who care for the 5 ½ acres of historic gardens. This position requires flexibility, stamina, and a willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Candidates must be knowledgeable in the areas of horticulture and landscape maintenance; ideal candidates will be familiar with the unique challenges related to conserving a public garden and a historic property.

Duties & Responsibilities 

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Maintain all plantings on a daily basis, including watering, weeding, deadheading, mulching, fertilizing, chemical spraying, pruning, and other maintenance as directed
• Operate and maintain tools and equipment, including mowers, utility vehicle (gator), and trimmers.
• Maintain landscape features such as walkways, sidewalks, curbs, statues, and fountains as directed
• Monitor garden conditions for visitor safety and reporting problems to supervisor
• Report problems related to pests, diseases, and/ or damage to gardens and grounds
• Assist with propagation of plants, seed collecting, and other greenhouse tasks
• Assist with recordkeeping related to chemical applications, plant documentation, and equipment inventory
• Supervise and work with garden volunteers
• Work with Tudor Place colleagues on garden preservation projects
• Perform snow removal and other emergency work when required (may include after-hours and weekend work for which a premium pay rate may be paid)
• Assist with the moving of plants, equipment, and garden furniture
• Assist with event setup for institutional and rental programs and events
• Assist with beekeeping
• Assist with site management using the IrisBG Botanical Garden Collection Management system
• Interact with the visiting public, including participation in tours and public programs
• Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Knowledge of identification, propagation, and cultivation techniques for a wide variety of herbaceous and woody plants, including knowledge of when/how to prune, to adjust soil content, to apply fertilizer and of water requirements for various plant material
• Knowledge of common garden pests, diseases, and symptoms of nutrient deficiencies for a variety of herbaceous and woody plants
• Knowledge of and ability to use gardening best practices in order to transplant a variety of plants, including knowledge of when to transplant and the ability to consider soil conditions, flowering time, and foliage at various stages of growth when undertaking transplant projects
• Knowledge of safety best practices and ability to routinely apply institutional best practices, including use of gloves, eye and ear protection, masks, boots, and other protective clothing for use when exposed to dirt, dust, mud, chemical and pesticide sprays
• Knowledge of greenhouse and nursery management best practices preferred
• General computer literacy and/or proficiency with Microsoft Office programs preferred
• Experience working with a collections/ horticultural database, preference for IrisBG
• Proficiency in Spanish preferred
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Ability to use, adjust, clean, service and organize gardening tools, such as picks, rakes, shovels, ladders, hoes, pruners, sprayers, mowers, weeders, snow blowers, etc. and follow safety procedures for the operation of machinery and tools
• Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and enthusiasm for working in a team environment
• Ability to solve problems creatively,
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• License to apply pesticides in the District of Columbia or the ability to obtain one

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Associate’s degree in Horticulture (Professional Certificate programs may be substituted for degree)
• Three years of relevant professional work experience
