Job Description 

The State Arboretum of Virginia, located at the University of Virginia’s Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, VA is offering a 10-week internship in Public Horticulture to begin approximately May 20, 2019 and end approximately July 26, 2019. Start and end dates are negotiable.
Interns will gain experience assisting with the care and maintenance of the Perennial Gardens and Native Plant Trail. Activities within these areas will include routine care (weeding, mulching, and planting), removal of invasive plants, plant records management, and more. The intern will have the opportunity to assist with Summer Camp for rising second through eighth graders. Approximately three weeks of the internship will be working with Environmental Education staff and camp attendees. Other projects will be developed as time allows.
The intern will have access to summer public programs free of charge, the library collections, and will work closely with various members of the arboretum staff and volunteers.
The Public Horticulture Intern will receive a stipend of $4000 paid in two installments during the program. Dormitory housing available on site.
The State Arboretum of Virginia (also known as the Orland E. White Arboretum) occupies the central 172 acres of Blandy Experimental Farm. Started in the 1930s, it contains over 5000 woody trees and shrubs from around the world. It is a reference garden for the Southeast Region of the American Conifer Society and includes the American Boxwood Society's Memorial Garden. In addition to the woody collection, herbaceous collections include the Nancy Larrick Crosby Native Plant Trail, Herb, and Pollination Gardens. Education and Experience 

Applicants must be enrolled in or have an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry, Environmental Science or Studies, or closely related field.
