Job Description 

The University of Virginia's Blandy Experimental Farm seeks a full-time native plant specialist to fill the position of Assistant Curator, Native Plant Trail at the State Arboretum of Virginia. Blandy Experimental Farm is a 700-acre University of Virginia ecological field station located in the northern Shenandoah Valley, about 10 miles east of Winchester and 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. Its mission is to increase understanding of the natural environment through research and education. The State Arboretum of Virginia, located within Blandy Experimental Farm, is a public garden displaying more than 5500 trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants in a diversity of habitats including woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and open fields.

Duties & Responsibilities 

The assistant curator maintains and develops the Arboretum's native plant trail as a semi-wild native woodland, meadow and wetland, propagates plants for the native plant trail, develops interpretive themes and displays, gives presentations on native plants to the public, and generally serves as the native plant ambassador for the Arboretum. The assistant curator oversees a corps of volunteers who help maintain the Native Plant Trail as needed. The employee in this position shares expertise with other plant curatorial staff, as well as education and research staff, in support of the facility's overall mission.

Education and Experience 

A successful candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of experience. B.S., M.S. or M.A Degree in horticulture, landscape design, botany, environmental science, ecology or a related scientific field is preferred, as is background or training in educational interpretation. Database experience is preferred as is experience working with volunteers. A valid driver’s license is required and a certified pesticide applicators permit is preferred. New employees will be required to obtain this permit within the first year of employment.

This job requires standing, walking, and lifting above and below the waist various weights, which may include different landscape equipment and materials. The employee in this position will work outdoors in all types of weather. Repetitive motion will be required while pruning, driving and weeding.

The position will remain open until filled. The salary range for this position is $38,000 - $45,000
