This position reports to a Senior Arboretum Gardener and is responsible for horticultural care of one or more planted sections devoted to a geographical region or botanical collection and other specialized landscapes (i.e. roses, herbs, demonstrations). Candidate must possess a basic knowledge of supervision, understand irrigation principles and techniques, IPM and pesticide application, and the ability to work with gardening tools and operate related power equipment.
South Coast Botanic Garden is an 87 acre public botanic garden in the South Bay/Palos Verdes area of Los Angeles County. The Garden is located on a site that was once a pit mine and then a sanitary landfill, before becoming a model of land reclamation and opening to the public as a botanic garden. The facility includes several specialty gardens, arboreta collections, trails, and indoor and outdoor event spaces. This exam may be used to fill open positions at facilities throughout the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation including the Los Angeles Arboretum and Botanic Garden, Virginia Robinson Garden, and Stoneview Nature Center. This exam may be used to fill Assistant Arboretum Gardener positions throughout the County of Los Angeles.
Responsible for horticultural care including planting, irrigation, weeding, fertilizing, pruning, and staking flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees.
Uses and maintains hand and power tools.
Completes reports regarding new plantings, plant death/loss, and pesticide-use.
Performs minor irrigation repair and irrigation controller programming.
Performs routine landscape installation and design such as trail or path construction and bed layout.
Provides information to visitors regarding botanical names and characteristics of plants and proper care of unusual plants in section(s).
And may conduct classes or presentations on various horticultural subjects.
Required Experience & License:
Two years of gardening experience in an arboretum, estate garden, botanical garden, retail nursery or display-oriented public garden. Completion of nine semester or twelve quarter units of botany, horticulture, landscape design or related subjects at accredited college may be substituted for one year of required experience. Valid Class C Driver’s license.
The Arboretum Gardener (D0283C) examination has posted Monday, July 29, 2019. Application filing will begin on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at 8:00 AM (PT). Filing will end on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 5:00 PM (PT).
