The Smithsonian Gardens horticulture internship provides an exceptionally well-rounded array of experiences in its intern program thanks to the wide diversity of services it offers to the Smithsonian, the world's largest museum complex. Interns will learn skills in a broad range of horticultural endeavors from SI's expert professional staff and can provide a strong practical background to emerging professionals hoping to enter the public gardening world.
Interns will have the opportunity to network with a team of professional landscape architects, horticulturists and gardeners responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of seasonal and permanent plantings on the Smithsonian campus.
While working in the garden, the intern will be responsible for the daily gardening maintenance that sustains an ecologically balanced habitat. The garden maintenance duties include watering, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, pest and disease identification and control and helping with the increase in plant diversity.
Internships with Grounds Management Operations are designed for students who seek work-related experience in a public garden with a diverse workforce. They involve manual labor; exposure to adverse weather conditions (particularly heat and humidity); and exposure to dust and dirt. Internships that focus on the Smithsonian gardens and greenhouse operations include regular horticulture maintenance duties such as planting, watering, weeding, and pruning.
This program accepts current and recently graduated undergraduate and graduate students studying horticulture or related fields. Selection is based on an evaluation of the candidate’s application and the relevance of their academic background and career goals.
Completed application, essay, academic records, and two letters of recommendation should be submitted through the Smithsonian Online Academic Application System (SOLAA) at https://solaa.si.edu.
