Seed Savers Exchange is currently seeking a Director of Sales and Business to join our team. The ideal candidate will build on the organization’s solid reputation and brand and continue to create new innovation to grow the organization’s online and wholesale seed operation. We are the only seed company in the country with an extensive 20,000+ variety Seed Bank onsite. We are looking to grow in creative and innovative ways to continue to make these unique and endangered heirloom varieties available to the wider public.
The Sales and Business Director is responsible for the ongoing operations of the online retail and wholesale operations of Seed Savers Exchange. This work, which generates about four million dollars in revenue annually, not only supports the ongoing work of Seed Savers Exchange in its preservation of rare heirloom varieties of fruits, herbs, vegetable and flowers, but its distribution of seeds through online and wholesale operations helps the organization to meet its mission in keeping this heirloom varieties alive in gardens across the country.
Working closely and collaboratively with organizational leadership, the Sales and Business Director is accountable for the sales, purchasing and receiving, order processing, customer experience, inventory management, and fulfillment of seed orders that are at the center of the business model of the Seed House.The Director will work collaboratively with the Marketing team to continue to expand the e-commerce to consumers channel, develop and implement strategies to grow sales and margin in all channels, and engage and grow the customer base to drive site traffic. The ideal candidate will have experience in high-growth, entrepreneurial environments and can manage day-to-day details while driving overall strategy.
We have a strong senior management team that ensures operations are successful, and are recruiting a Sales and Business Director to implement an innovative business plan to continue to increase our impact in the larger food and farming movement. The ideal candidate will have a background in business administration, branding, e-commerce and online marketplace, will be comfortable leading a team of 6-8 supervisors and overseeing a staff of 15 to 20 employees. The ideal candidate will have an understanding or an aptitude to learn NetSuite or a similar ERP/CRM operating system. An ability to meet targets and goals in each season along with a clear vision of long-range planning for the continued refinement of the business operation will be critical to the Sales and Business Director’s success.

Accountable for managing all aspects of commercial revenue streams relating to the Seed House (ecommerce, mail order catalog and wholesale), totaling approximately $4,000,000. This includes all seed sales, plants, potatoes, garlic, apple trees, and miscellaneous catalog items
Establishes and meets reasonable sales targets, in collaboration with full management team
Brings creativity and innovation to our catalog and product development, identifying new emerging markets and trends, as well as opportunities to enhance our current catalog with rare and exclusive heirloom varieties directly from our collection
Responsible for developing and implementing the Seed House Business Plan, a strategic plan to drive overall sales for the company. Working in close collaboration with the Marketing and Communication team, the Sales/Business Director generates and leads management teams in a strategic sales planning strategy, maintaining and increasing sales and revenue streams for the company. This strategy will support Seed Savers Exchange in its mission as the leading purveyor of heirloom and open-pollinated varieties in the United States.
Leads and works with Seed House Senior Management team to develop, source, and stock the optimal and unique variety assortment in order to optimize customer satisfaction and retention
Serving our market; improving and maintaining our service to our core customers, both home garden and mixed market farmer customers, both direct sale and wholesale
Develops budget for Seed House, working in conjunction with the Executive Director and Deputy Director to meet financial benchmarks, relating to sales revenue, staffing, expense, and capital
Recruit, train and advance mission and values based staffing. Lead a culture and environment that attracts, motivates, develops and retains compatible, qualified staff
Effectively manage direct reports, providing strategic direction, support, development and feedback to ensure healthy and successful workplace
Innovative and creative business acumen
Understanding of key retail metrics, including markup, margin, and sell thru
Excellent computer (Excel, NetSuite) and record keeping skills
Strong collaborative leadership and ability to foster healthy, productive work environment
Knowledge of the organic seed and gardening industry preferred
Skilled multi-tasker with meticulous attention to detail
Excellent time management, communication and organizational skills
Positive and self-motivated
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and five or more years of supervisory experience in production, marketing and sales
Minimum 3 years of experience in ecommerce management
Strong aptitude for financial/accounting principles, spreadsheet manipulation, and performance reporting
Demonstrated leadership ability, familiarity with HR, and good communication and writing skills
