Job Description 

Seed Savers Exchange is seeking a Perishable Inventory Coordinator/ Seed Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate should be a dynamic individual with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agriculture, agronomy, or biology, have experience leading a team in a professional workplace, and proficiency in excel and business software.

Working under the Sales and Business Director, the Perishable Inventory Manager will be directly responsible for coordinating production, receiving, wholesale purchasing, forecasting sales, and shipping of garlic, potatoes, apple trees, and transplants. This is a leadership position encompassing all aspects of packing and order fulfillment as well as working with the Catalog Field Manager to facilitate and develop the Catalog Stock Seed program.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Primary person responsible for catalog sales of perishable inventory:

Transplants
Generate realistic sales predictions.
Prior to plant shipments, obtain the necessary plant health certificates and forward to state inspectors as required.
Schedule plant order requirements by ship date, and communicate order requirements to grower.
Order supplies with sufficient lead time and quantity to ensure seamless packing and shipping of product (pre-printed boxes, plant tags, pots, trays, instructions, and miscellaneous packing supplies).
Assist in determining seasonal staffing requirements, hiring as needed, and taking direct supervisory responsibility of those personnel.
Lead a team of 10-20 people to most effectively pick, pack, and ship transplant orders weekly during transplant season.
Maintain plant inventory to ensure healthy “hardened” plants, while attempting to control height so that plants remain shippable for as long a period as possible.

Potatoes
Generate realistic sales predictions.
Schedule potato order requirements, and communicate order requirements to grower.
Assist in determining seasonal staffing requirements, hiring as needed, and taking direct supervisory responsibility of those personnel.
Lead a team of 3-6 people to most effectively pick, pack, and ship potato items and orders, weekly, during potato season.

Garlic
Determine stock seed requirements for subsequent year’s garlic production. This will help determine amount of garlic anticipated to be available for sale, and which varieties to offer.
Communicate with Field Production leadership team on varieties and quantities of garlic planted for following season
Communicate with growers to ensure sufficient quantity and quality will be available for committed sales.
Assist in determining seasonal staffing requirements, hiring as needed, and taking direct supervisory responsibility of those personnel.
Lead a team of 1-6 people to most effectively pick, pack, and ship garlic items and orders, weekly, during garlic shipping season.

Apple Trees
Work in conjunction with the Orchard Manager and the Sales and Business Director to determine rootstock requirements for subsequent year’s apple tree production.
Coordinate with Orchard Manger and Field Production leadership team to allocate labor for planting, mulching, weeding, bud grafting, and harvesting trees/rootstock.
Assist in determining seasonal staffing requirements, hiring as needed, and taking direct supervisory responsibility of those personnel.
Lead a team of 1-5 people to most effectively pick, pack, and ship apple tree orders, weekly, during apple tree shipping season.

Comply with and oversee implementation of the Organic Systems Plan, per the Seed House Inventory Manager, as it applies to all responsibilities, including plant health certificates, organic certificates, and logs.
November through February, packing bulk seed (by hand and using Data-Count machine), and filling bulk seed orders.
Assemble orders and prepare for shipment.
Direct supervisory and training responsibility of 1-6 employees, while they process, bag, pack, and ship potatoes, apple trees, transplants, and garlic.

Education and Experience 

Skills:
Excellent computer (Excel, NetSuite) and record keeping skills.
Mechanical and technical aptitude sufficient to operate, train, and troubleshoot seed packing and printing equipment.
Leadership and ability to foster healthy, productive work environment.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit at computer screen for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds routinely, and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Ability to work in cool (45˚F) for extended periods

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in horticulture and/or equivalent experience
Self-motivation, attention to detail, and ability to organize tasks.
