HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Horticulturist will support San Diego Zoo Global’s mission of saving species worldwide by performing horticultural, grounds maintenance, and tree related work; develops new area when necessary. This position reports to a Lead/Supervisor.

Duties & Responsibilities 

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

Mow, edge, irrigate and fertilize lawns
Fertilize and cultivate plantings and shrubs
Prepare new areas for planting
Plant transplants and nurture seedlings and other new plantings
Collects seeds
Prune shrubbery and trees
Rake, sweep and generally maintain an appealing appearance to grounds
Controls pests
Answer questions from the public
May drive motorize vehicles on and off grounds
Adhere to all SDZG and department policies and practices
Practice the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards
Operate power machinery as required, such as mower, edger and watering truck
Rake, sweep and generally maintain an appealing appearance to grounds
May occasionally conduct tours, both walking and botanical bus tours

Education and Experience 

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

General knowledge of trees, shrubs, bedding plant material and their growth principles, horticultural soil conditions and preparations, methods and precautions for applying fertilizers and insecticides, working knowledge of tree removal, experience with irrigation system troubleshooting, repair and installation from the valve to the sprinkler head, maintenance practices and work safety practices. Scheduled work hours per week will be approximately 40 hours. Work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday; however, weekends, nights and emergency work may be required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age

JOB EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of work experience is preferred
Working with tractors, loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, ability to use walk behind gas powered equipment, the ability to operate equipment (i.e. heavy duty trucks) as well as tractors and carts is essential
Ability to move moderate to heavy objects, work from elevated positions and perform other duties as required

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

Degree or certificate in horticulture, botany or a related subject is desirable
A current and valid California driver license in good standing required

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work outdoors; exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, and allergens; work in temperatures above 100 degrees in the summer months at the SDZG Safari Park; equipment noise/vibration; possible exposure to poisonous insects and wild animals; exposure to fertilizer, insecticide and other chemicals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position has been identified as one requiring at least occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds; frequent walking and move about on uneven terrain; frequently sit and stoop, kneel, bending or work in confined or cramped positions.
