HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION
The Horticulture Manager performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Global's mission and vision of saving species worldwide by establishing and maintaining high horticultural standards and practices providing direction, training and motivation for the horticultural staff, interns and volunteers. This position reports to the Director of Horticulture
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Manages assigned staff
Assists in developing long-range botanical plans and exhibit design
Coordinates new and renovated construction and maintenance of projects
Develops work and pricing estimates
Submits bids, and conducts related coordination meetings
Coordinates, reviews, and approves work of vendors and contractors
Conducts a variety of inspections and troubleshoots problems
Develops, administers, and monitors assigned budgets
Oversees irrigation and water management
Recommends related policies and procedures
Assists in researching and acquiring new plant materials
Recommends equipment and supply purchases
Compiles a variety of reports and documents
Directs operations in the absence of the Curator of Horticulture
Adheres to all SDZG and department policies and practices
Exemplifies the highest standard of work ethics and leadership
Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service
Performs related duties and responsibilities as required
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is seeking a Horticulture Manager with at least 4 years of experience as a professional horticulturist. We are seeking an effective communicator with management experience and good leadership skills. Applicants must have construction project management experience. This position will work closely with Architecture department on large-scale landscape construction projects and will also supervise contractor bidding and installation work. A Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, landscape architecture, natural sciences or a related field, or equivalent specialized training is essential. Preferred licenses/certifications: Registered Landscape Architect, ISA Arborist, Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor, Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper. Work schedule will include working weekends as needed. A good driving record and valid driver license is required.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Plant identification, landscape design, plant propagation, irrigation and water management
Turf management, and fertilization
Fumigants, herbicides, pesticides, and integrated pest management
Botanical conservation and research
Botanical garden administration
Common and exotic plant material is desirable
Effective leadership skills
Develop, administer and monitor budgets
Estimate construction projects
Communicate effectively (verbal and written)
Work well with others in a diverse environment
Prepare and make presentations
Use word processing, spreadsheet, and database systems
Work outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to chemicals, animals, insects, and noise.
May require occasional lifting in excess of 50 pounds; frequent walking and move about on uneven terrain; may travel domestically and internationally.
