Job Description 

The Ruth Mott Foundation (the Foundation) seeks an experienced nonprofit/foundation leader to serve as its next President. The Foundation is based in Flint, Michigan and its mission is to advocate, support and stimulate community engagement and vitality in the Greater Flint community. The Foundation accomplishes its mission through grantmaking in the areas of youth, safety, economic development, and neighborhoods in north Flint and through the operation and programmatic work centered at Applewood, the former Mott family estate. At the end of 2017, the Foundation held assets of $235 million and distributed $10.1 million through its grantmaking and operating programs at Applewood. Of the amount that the Foundation distributed at the end of last year, $5.6 million went towards grants; $2.1 million to Applewood; $2.3 million for administration; and $100,000 for capital improvements. The President reports to a nine-member Board of Trustees and directs a staff of 25 full-time, ten part-time, and six seasonal employees.

This is a unique opportunity for an energetic, mission driven servant leader who seeks to achieve positive impact and success in restoring community vitality and hope. Over the last four years, the Foundation has risen as a trusted and respected leader in the Flint community through its current strategic focus and the care and attention it brings to community engagement and listening. The overarching task for the next President will be in sustaining and continuing to invigorate the Foundation's leadership in the community. Specific critical objectives for the next President will be in leading the development of a master plan for Applewood as well as continuing to implement the bold and exciting strategic plan adopted in 2016 focusing on the north Flint region. With Applewood playing an increasingly critical role as a convening location, educational arm, and external engagement base for the Foundation, greater thought and planning will be necessary to leverage this vital community asset more effectively and better relate its work to the grantmaking work of the Foundation. The next President must also connect and leverage the resources and expertise of outside organizations to support the Foundation's work.

Despite recent headlines featuring Flint, this is an exciting time to serve as a community leader. In 2014 the City of Flint adopted its first city-wide master plan in fifty years to reverse the decades of physical deterioration, economic distress and social divisions that have burdened the community. The Foundation adopted its north Flint strategic plan based on a combination of community priorities expressed in the city master plan and from its own intensive community listening and feedback sessions. Additionally, the emergency manager order was repealed early this year restoring authority to local officials with respect to daily finances and government decisions. The next President will engage in a sustained and meaningful dialogue with Flint's civic leaders and ordinary citizens who are deeply committed to effecting transformative change in their community. This is a community where an individual can see the results of their work.
