Red Butte Garden is seeking an Assistant Horticulturist for the Water Conservation Garden and Dumke Horticultural Center. Assists Horticulturist by providing excellent horticultural care of specific outdoor garden areas as assigned, including the living plant collections held within.
-Assists Horticulturist in all aspects of plant care and garden maintenance in assigned areas, with an emphasis on water and resource wise gardening.
-Assists Horticulturist in leading and training seasonal staff and volunteers in the performance of necessary maintenance, and ensuring safe practices.
-Monitors assigned areas and assists in prioritizing and implementing all care, including: planting, weeding, deadheading, mulching, pruning, pest management, raking, shoveling, record keeping, garden design, event support, snow removal and various other duties as required to support the mission of Red Butte Garden.
-Serves as a professional horticulturist sharing knowledge with the public, particularly water wise gardening; and participates on committees as needed, such as the Design and Maintenance.
-Assists in ensuring maintenance activities are scheduled to avoid conflict with garden or private events.
Associate degree in Horticulture, Biology or a related field, or equivalency and 1 year of related experience required. A valid Utah State Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License, or the ability to obtain license within 6 months of hire required. A general knowledge of plant identification and nomenclature and specific knowledge of grounds and garden maintenance. Demonstrated oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with a diverse clientele.

Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Floriculture, Agriculture or related field strongly preferred, with three or more years’ experience in horticulture or agriculture with emphasis on water wise plants and water wise gardening practices; two years of supervisory experience; prior experience in a public garden; able to identify a wide variety of ornamental plants, weeds, insects and diseases, including beneficials; able to safely operate equipment common to the trade, demonstrated experience with landscape design; general knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office.
