Job Description 

Red Butte Garden is seeking a Landscape Irrigation technician to maintain the Garden’s irrigation systems and other water related systems.

Duties & Responsibilities 

As part of the Garden’s Irrigation team, the purpose of this position is to maintain the irrigation systems for Red Butte Garden, including but not limited to systems that irrigate outdoor garden plantings, turf, greenhouse systems, and interior plant displays. Additionally maintains other water related systems such as outdoor drinking fountains, decorative fountains, pond diversion system, seasonal startup and shutdown of restrooms used for summer concerts, and an Interactive Fountain located in the Children’s Garden.

Ensures all water delivery systems are operating efficiently to minimize waste and conserve water use. Ensures work is performed in a manner that avoids/minimizes disruption for garden guests and scheduled events. Duties include and are not limited to: system diagnosis and maintenance/repair, seasonal startup and shutdown, design and installation, coordinating water application needs with Horticulture staff in charge of each respective area, programs run times and frequencies (including shut off times) utilizing Irrigation management software and data from an onsite weather station.

Selected applicant will be expected to obtain and maintain a ‘Registered Pool Operator’s License’, and ensure daily maintenance requirements are met/maintained regarding the Interactive Fountain, which is considered a ‘pool’ by the Salt Lake Valley Health Department. Assists with all other duties to support the mission of Red Butte Garden, including snow removal duties in winter.

Education and Experience 

Three years previous experience as a Ground Sprinkler Operator or equivalency; demonstrated communications skills; and a commitment to providing excellent customer service required. Completion of an approved apprenticeship program is preferred.

Demonstrated competency with central control computer programs used in irrigation system management.
