Red Butte Garden is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator responsible for all aspects of the Red Butte Garden volunteer program including: recruiting and screening new volunteers; assigning volunteers to various positions in the Garden; training, recognizing and retaining current volunteers; managing the volunteer database; and evaluating, refining, and developing volunteer programs. The Volunteer Coordinator also oversees Red Butte Garden’s private and public tour programs. The position reports to the Director of Administrative Services and works collaboratively with other staff members throughout the Garden.
This position is Category I: Mandatory Required on Campus or at Health Care Facilities.
o Retain the number of active volunteers in accordance with the Garden’s strategic plan
o Provide information to the Garden’s Marketing Department regarding volunteer opportunities for PSA’s, brochures, newspaper ads, the Garden’s website, etc.
o Field phone call and email inquiries about the Garden and its volunteer program
o Public speaking and attendance at conferences and community service fairs
o Create partnerships with community service centers, service learning organizations, corporate and other groups
o Interview new volunteers to determine availability and area of interest and place individuals accordingly
o Develop and lead new volunteer orientation and training sessions
o Regularly communicate with departments to track volunteer activity and ever-changing volunteer needs
o Produce quarterly volunteer spotlight in the Garden’s printed newsletter
o Provide conflict management for volunteers and staff
o Organize and implement volunteer incentive and awards programs
o Lead planning efforts for volunteer recognition events including annual volunteer appreciation event
o Maintain and update current volunteer database
o Implement and manage volunteer budget
o Schedule volunteers for special events, tram tours, off-site community events, horticulture shifts, etc.
o Conduct exit interviews and follow-up calls with recent “inactive” volunteers to inform volunteer retention practices
o May assign, direct and review work of support staff.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
