Job Description 

Pittsburgh Botanic Garden inspires people to value plants, garden design and the natural world by cultivating plant collections of the Allegheny Plateau and temperate regions, creating display gardens, conducting educational programs, and conserving the environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Visitor Experience & Events Director is responsible for providing a positive visitor experience to all guest through daily admissions, private events (rentals) and public community events. Included in this area of responsibility are the welcome desk, café management, retail sales, private rentals, corporate rentals, group visit coordination, and fundraising events. The full-time salaried position is responsible for delivering yearly earned revenue goals by generating and growing daily admissions, events, café, and retail sales. The Visitor Experience & Event Director is a member of the senior team at the Garden, reporting directly to the Executive Director.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Essential Job Functions
• Supervise Visitor Experience & Events Department staff through managers as direct reports
• Interface with visitors, clients, vendors, etc.
• Understand the base of financial support and the earned income strategies of all segments of the organization
• Create effective reports that both inform staff leadership and board volunteers of progress and challenges
• Work collaboratively with other departments to effectively reach common organizational goals
• Develop strong relationships with and secure the trust and confidence of the Executive Director and Board
• Value and enforce the Garden’s core values, history, culture, traditions, communities, programs, personalities, and governance structure

Education and Experience 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• The ideal candidate must have a minimum of seven years of experience in guest services and event management, along with food service and retail operations at a public garden or similar non-profit museum setting
• Possess excellent planning and organization skills
• Have experience in employee management with effective communication talent
• Express friendly interpersonal skills, be a staff leader with the ability to build and manage the Garden’s front-line staff
• Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Maintain productive relationships with board members, staff, foundations, donors, volunteers, and other stakeholders
• Build new relationships throughout the community benefitting the Garden
• Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy
• Utilize data in goal setting and strategy measurement and demonstrate management-level familiarity with Blackbaud’s Altru software.
• Demonstrate team building and organizational skills, a record of completing assignments, and successful experience in developing guest experiences
• Directly supervise staff, including hiring and training of a department consisting of approximately 15 full-time, part-time, and seasonal employees.
• Successful completion of required background checks and clearances prior to start date (Child Abuse Clearance; PA State Police Background Check; FBI Fingerprint Background Check).
• Other necessary certifications (e.g. ServSafe)

WORK CONDITIONS
• Primarily indoor work conditions with regular outdoor work at rentals and community events
• This position requires a scheduled flexible workweek that includes weekday, evening, weekend and holiday availability. Typical work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday.
• Evening work for events and weekend work for private and public Garden events.
• Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and traverse moderate sites.
