Job Description 


Senior Gardener will have at least 7-10 years of horticultural experience within a public garden setting. Under minimal supervision performs specialized horticultural and landscape operations, designs, installs, and landscape renovation projects.


Performs daily horticultural care to ensure that the gardens and property are well kept. Including weed control, pruning, plantings, watering particularly the specialized work pertaining to bed, containers and tree maintenance.
Identifies and corrects problems of plants, ornamental grasses, trees, and shrubs, e.g., diseases, injuries, and pest infestations. Follows standard industry practices related to disease and pest control management.
Responsible for the continued development and implementation of all seasonal flower beds including ornamental trees and shrubs.
Performs and directs the pruning, fertilization, and removal of all trees and shrubs.
Able to design, plan and implement planting displays in the gardens and containers.
Maintain, water, and fertilize all indoor and outdoor container plants and garden beds making seasonal changes as required.
From time to time assist with garden program event set-up.
Operate hand tools and light/medium power tools and equipment: including but not limited to hand saws, hand shears, electric shears, backpack blower, string trimmer, electric lawnmower and chain saw.
Inspect the equipment to be used each day to ensure that it is safe and in proper working order. Clean equipment daily or at the end of each use to insure a professional image.
Assist the manager in determining the fiscal requirements for the landscape in preparing budgetary recommendations
Plan, participate, and assist in the implementation of all newly proposed landscape projects
Greet visitors while in the gardens and answer questions as needed. Promote a positive visitor experience.
Other related duties as assigned


Qualifications include:

7-10 years of intensive horticultural experience
Working knowledge of horticultural practices, materials, and techniques
Self-motivated and attentive to details
Knowledgeable in all areas of public garden operations
Broad and vast knowledge of plants
Training in various forms of plant maintenance preferred
Good organizational and time management skills
Effective written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work with a wide range of people
Valid driver’s license
Must be committed to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society


Must be able to lift 50 pounds, work in bending and standing positions for extended periods, work in adverse weather conditions.


Monday – Friday
8:30 am to 5 pm
Occasional workdays with longer hours
Occasional evenings and/or weekends
