Job Description 

The Philadelphia Navy Yard is approximately a 1200 acre campus located in south Philadelphia. The campus is in the process of revamping its landscapes and has contracted the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to lead the way in this unique transformation. The grounds are comprised of a large number of mature trees & shrubs, mixed perennial beds, annual displays, rain gardens, and meadow plantings which are maintained by a small team of seasonal gardeners which this lead by the PHS project manager and lead gardener . The position reports to the Head Gardener

Duties & Responsibilities 

• Work on a team of 3 seasonal gardeners maintaining the gardens
• Perform seasonal garden tasks such as pruning, planting, weeding, mulching, dividing & transplanting, debris removal, as well as other required tasks
• Installation of new perennial gardens as well as renovations of existing landscapes
• Installation and care of annual installations
• Maintenance and care of tools, equipment, and company vehicles
• Assist head gardener in weekly garden task scheduling and planning
• Implement excellent safety practices

• Promote sustainability to individuals, other agencies and communities
• Remain current with organization information and changes
• Promotes the work of PHS Programs locally, regionally, and nationally.
• Comply with the organization’s policies and procedures
• Promote and applies teamwork skills
• Notifies appropriate individuals promptly of problems or unusual matters of significance
• Attend appropriate meetings and training sessions
• Use sustainable practices whenever possible

Education and Experience 

Qualifications include:
• Minimum 1-2 years of proven garden experience; certificate in horticulture or related field preferred
• Working knowledge of best horticultural practices and techniques
• Proficiency in proper pruning techniques for a variety of ornamental shrubs and trees
• Self-motivated and attentive to details
• Knowledgeable in are areas of weed identification
• Ability to safely operate commercial grade power equipment including string trimmers, hedge trimmers, pole pruners
• Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a small vehicle
• Must be committed to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
