Job Description 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Manages gardening staff at Meadowbrook Farm. Coordinates and manages all garden activities (garden design, planting projects, garden renovations and garden maintenance). Manages physical plant of property including all buildings, garden structures, pools, roads, woodlands and deer fence using on site staff and 3rd party contractors. Develops and manages budgets for both gardening and physical plant needs. Partners with other PHS staff to plan and execute programming on site. Participates in development of short and long-term strategic planning.

Duties & Responsibilities 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Horticulture:
o Manages full-time gardens staff, interns, and volunteers
o Creates prioritized weekly and monthly gardening needs
o Manages Plant Records
o Manages Volunteer Program
o Works with VP Public Horticulture to create engaging permanent and seasonal designs
o Orders supplies, tools, and works with Manager of Procurement for plant acquisitions
o Participates in development of Landscape Management Plan for Public Horticulture
o Manages IPM Program; turf care program; invasive removal plan
• Physical Plant:
o Ensures good maintenance of all physical features: deer fence, automatic gates, pathways, parking lots, patios, and other hard surfaces, pools, ponds, water features, buildings operating systems (HVAC, Heating, Plumbing, etc.)
o Manages repairs for all buildings, including state of good repair for all structures, buildings, and physical structures
o Manages maintenance of all vehicles, equipment and machinery
o Maintains detailed maintenance logs for all assets
• Programming & Planning:
o Participates in short and long-term planning and priority setting with VP of Public Horticulture
o Manages goal setting with gardening team
o Leads short and long-term process for garden development and renovations
o Works with PHS staff to develop membership and visitor programs and content
o Ensures that all programs and activities at Meadowbrook Farm are fully staffed and well executed
• Business Management
o Works with VP of Public Horticulture and Business Manager to develop and maintain budgets
o Develops short and long-term capital needs with Business Manager

o Establishes vendor sources, other than live plant material, and works directly with Manager of Procurement on live plant material orders and needs
o Assists Business Manager with creating MBF procedures and policies
o Works with VP of Public Horticulture and Chief Development Officer to establish and support yearly fundraising goals
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience 

Qualifications include:
• Minimum 5 years of proven public garden and horticulture management experience
• Working knowledge of horticultural practices, materials, and techniques
• Self-motivated and attentive to details
• Knowledgeable in all areas of public garden operations
• Valid driver’s license
• Must be committed to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds, work in bending and standing positions for extended periods, work in adverse weather conditions.
