The Director of Development will provide overall leadership, management direction, program development and strategic planning and vision for the North Carolina Botanical Garden’s development program. This position reports directly to the Garden Director and is a member of the Garden’s senior leadership team. Under the guidance of the Garden Director and in collaboration with other program directors, the Director of Development will design and implement comprehensive strategies for support of the Garden’s operating budget and endowments. The Director of Development supervises staff and develops and implements program plans and budgets for the development department. This position is responsible for cultivating and leading efforts to work with individuals, corporations, and foundations to raise significant private funds for the North Carolina Botanical Garden including but not limited to (1) identification, cultivation, solicitation, closure, and recognition of major and principal gifts, including endowment and planned giving; (2) annual giving to support the Garden’s operating budget, including membership program, and annual fund; and (3) grants development.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is in the public phase of an ambitious, multi-year, comprehensive $4.25 billion campaign. The incumbent will be responsible for leading the Garden’s campaign with a current goal of $30 million. The University’s overall development organization is managed collaboratively under the leadership of the University Development Office. This position will work closely with the University Development Office with a dotted reporting line to the Executive Director of Development for Constituent Programs and represent the Garden in the University Development Office and with development colleagues across campus.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Relevant Bachelor’s degree and post-Baccalaureate degree required. Preference will be given to candidates with an educational background in an area related to the mission of the Garden such as botany, conservation biology, ecology or related field.
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: The Director of Development will be an accomplished professional with a demonstrated record of success with respect to fundraising in a botanical garden, conservation organization, or similar institution. The successful candidate will have five to ten years of progressive fundraising experience, preferably in higher education, with a demonstrated record of accomplishments with regard to major gifts. The preferred candidate will have a thorough knowledge of and sensitivity to the nature and purpose of a university-affiliated public garden and be committed to the North Carolina Botanical Garden’s mission. They must also be energetic, creative, organized, and enthusiastic about working with and inspiring the confidence of multiple constituencies, including volunteers, top-level donors and prospects, and administrative officials.
Other essential skills include the ability to articulate the Garden’s mission, vision, and role to a wide range of audiences both verbally and in writing; exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills; being detail-oriented with excellent organizational and computer skills; and having the ability to meet multiple deadlines, to work independently, meet high goals, and interact effectively with alumni, friends, and staff in a public research university according to the highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by collaborative teamwork, initiative, critical thinking, good judgment, consistency of output, and timeliness of follow-through and have the ability and willingness to travel extensively, as needed, to accomplish goals.
