More than classroom learning, The North Carolina Arboretum is seeking the right applicant to help us bring education to life by connecting visitors and students to nature-based education.
Formally known as the Informal Education Engagement Specialist, this role will serve as one of the primary informational desk engagement specialists for the Education Center. Additionally, they will work within a collaborative team to help design, build, and maintain exhibits within the Education Center, manage the education department’s live animal collection and lead and assist in other self-led education experiences offered at The North Carolina Arboretum.
Pay for this role will be $16 per hour. Considered a temporary position under State of North Carolina standards, the Specialist will work 11 out of 12 months each year.
This position will report to the Informal Education Coordinator and Education Director.
Major tasks will include but are not limited to:
** Informational desk engagement- This will include being stationed at the Education Center’s front desk to serve visitors in orienting and answering questions, as well as registering and booking for on-site youth programs.
** Manage the live animal collection- Managing the care for our live animals composed of amphibians, reptiles, and arthropods. This includes creating the feeding and cleaning schedules of our live animals for fellow staff, monitoring trends and conducting wellness exams, and building and improving animal enclosures.
** Fabrication and maintenance of onsite exhibits/interpretation- Assisting in creating the interpretation and exhibits for the Nature Discovery Room and Education Center lobby and temporary and seasonal exhibits, as well as the management of the ecolab classroom.
** Lead and assist in other self-led education experiences for all ages
Additional tasks include:
** Periodically lead in-person programs in outdoor and environmental education in connection with our on-site programming offerings.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Minimum of a high school diploma is required. Any combination of education or experience equaling a degree in teaching/education, childhood development, outdoor education, biology, ecology or a related field is preferred. Basic computer skills required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Youth leadership experience and good communication skills working with the public and within a collaborative team environment required; Knowledge and abilities in using hand tools and best animal care practices preferred. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail desired; Use of the Google Drive suite and basic graphic design and/or editing software preferred but not required. Knowledge of local flora and fauna desired but not required.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills
Knowledge and training in graphic design and/or exhibit design is preferred but not required. Experience taking care of animals, especially reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods, and their enclosures is preferred.
