Job Description 

The North Carolina Arboretum is a 434-acre campus nestled in the Southern Appalachian Mountains just South of Asheville. It offers acres of cultivated gardens and groomed trails featuring some of the most beautiful, botanically-diverse plants in the region.

The Horticulture Department works to promote the stewardship and enjoyment of the wealth of plant life within the South Appalachians. This is done through designing, installing and maintaining world-renowned gardens and demonstrating cultivated and natural landscapes through Horticulture, Greenhouse and Bonsai exhibits. Horticulture supports activities including installation, maintenance and care of all gardens, landscape, turf, grounds and trails, the production within the greenhouse and nursery areas, and all other horticulture aspects relating to the use of the property. The specific program areas that are responsible for executing these activities are: Production, Plant Records, Bonsai Curation and Grounds and Gardens.

The NC Arboretum is currently seeking four (4) Horticulture Assistants.

These four available positions are temporary appointments up to 11 months in duration working within the North Carolina Arboretum’s Horticulture Department. These positions generally work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. to include rotational weekends and overtime as assigned.

The pay will be $14 per hour.

NOTE: All four positions advertised will participate in group or individual tasks outside of daily work assignments as needed by the greater Horticulture Department. Examples of such tasks would be, not limited to, seasonal landscape display installation, brush chipping, sod installation, exhibit installation, painting, landscape installation and construction, etc.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Horticulture Assistants work alongside the Arboretum’s team of professional Horticulturist and will primarily be assigned / recruited for daily duty to one of three work crews to include Grounds, Maintenance, Natural Landscapes or Formal Gardens (see below). They will also be assigned occasional group work task falling under all three categories as needed. These are predominantly hands-on positions working in all weather conditions performing horticulture maintenance campus wide.

Primary Assignment positions for the following crews are available:

Horticulture Assistant (1 position, Grounds Maintenance):

This position reports for daily supervision to the Grounds Maintenance Crew Leader. The primary focus of this position is all aspects of turf maintenance to include mowing, string trimming, edging, weed management, fertilization, and leaf and litter removal. Other duties include mulching, debris management, road repair, snow removal, equipment operation and light irrigation repair.

Preferred knowledge and/or experience: commercial turf maintenance, operating small engine equipment (mowers, trimmers, etc.), and operating heavy equipment (tractors, etc.)

Horticulture Assistant (1 position, Natural Landscape):

This position reports for daily supervision to the Natural Landscape Crew Leader. The primary focus of this position is all aspects of landscape maintenance to include planting, watering, mulching, weed removal, string trimming, leaf and litter removal, brush chipping, pruning, trail maintenance, invasive exotic plant control, snow removal, equipment operation, landscape construction and carpentry.

Preferred knowledge and/or experience: tree work (chainsaw operation), commercial landscaping (maintenance or installation), and plant identification skills.

Horticulture Assistant (2 positions, Formal Gardens): This position reports for daily supervision to the Gardens Crew Leader. The primary focus of this position is all aspects of garden maintenance to include planting, watering, mulching, weed removal, sheering, pruning, perennial cut back, leaf and litter removal, floral displays, grooming of perennial and annual plantings, equipment operation and light carpentry.

Preferred knowledge and/or experience: garden maintenance, floriculture and plant identification skills.
