Salary Range: $25,000 -$35,000
Reports to: Director of Living Landscapes
Position type and expected hours of work: Full time. Some weekend and evening work may be required during special events
Summary: Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG) is seeking a Horticulturist to maintain native, wetland and ornamental landscapes. The landscapes are primarily at offsite locations such as the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University and the Slover Library as part of NBG’s outreach initiative. The candidate must be able to work independently. The position will occasionally partner with horticulture staff onsite at NBG.
Maintains horticulture beds, native plants and wetland areas through general horticultural practices.
A self-starter who can work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend and/or stoop.
Has the ability to push, pull and perform manual labor during working hours.
Has a valid VA driver’s license.
VA Registered Pesticide Applicator’s license strongly preferred or must obtain within 30 days of hire.
Virginia Certified Horticulturist strongly preferred or obtain at earliest opportunity
Care and maintain all aspects of assigned gardens at the highest level of horticultural technique.
Maintain display beds through planting, weeding, watering, pruning, deadheading, mulching, edging, raking and fertilization.
Perform the appropriate soil preparation and planting of native and wetland plants.
Possess and expand an in-depth knowledge of wetland and native plants, make plant selection suggestions, and assist the Director in locating desirable additions to the display beds.
Complete accurate and timely accession records for all plants associated with garden under his/her care and ensure that all plants are labeled appropriately.
Partner with NBG Education staff to develop collaborative opportunities for VWC staff, students and guests.
Occasionally works alongside other members of the Horticulture Department in team projects.
Operates small engine equipment and motor vehicles safely. (NBG vehicle, golf cart, weed-eater, blower, edger, etc.)
Cleans and uses hand tools and equipment responsibly.
Familiarity with Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint a plus.
Assists with special events and other duties as assigned.
Associate’s Degree in Horticulture and a minimum of 2 years hands on experience preferred, or the equivalent in experience and related education.
