Job Description 

Position Type: Full-time employment, exempt under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

Norfolk Botanical Garden seeks a candidate for the position of Director of Facilities. Reporting to the President, this senior management position will be responsible for the buildings, equipment, facilities and hospitality support at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

The Director of Facilities will oversee a team of approximately 22 staff including managers and shift supervisors. The position is ultimately responsible for building maintenance including all HVAC systems, vehicle maintenance including trams, boats, golf carts and company vehicles, as well as determining and scheduling repairs and longer-term capital investment proposals. Coordination of daily operations with outside contractors in charge of projects, oversight of waste reduction improvements, and all safety inspections fall under the responsibility of this position. This position monitors onsite construction and partners with the IT department for management of alarm systems, surveillance, etc. to ensure safe campus operations.

The Director of Facilities will be in charge of a departmental budget and will negotiate with outside vendors for supplies, repairs, and other measures.

Summary Job Description
Responsible for all aspects of the following: planning, directing, and overseeing building operations and services; purchasing and repairing equipment; maintaining all buildings and vehicles; and being a trusted senior leader for the organization.

Job Skills and Essential Functions
Analytical Skills: must look at a variety of information and make decisions based on needs and budget concerns.
Leadership Skills: must motivate and coordinate employees, as well as deal with any disciplinary issues that may arise.
Valid state driver’s license and ability to drive NBG vehicles.

Essential Physical Functions: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend, twist and/or stoop. Has the ability to push, pull and perform manual labor during working hours. Ability to work in an office setting while sitting for extended periods of time utilizing a computer, email system, phone/phone system and radio system for communication.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Inspect structure of buildings and determine if repairs are needed
Directly manage the maintenance of all buildings, utilities, HVAC systems, power tools and equipment, boats, trams, golf carts, and other vehicles
Provide oversight and project management for any renovation, restoration, or other building projects including permitting and licenses as required
Liaison with City of Norfolk departments for services and materials as needed
Maintain vendor relationships and support request for proposals efforts
Manage the overall team with responsibility for interviews, personnel performance and evaluation
Collaborate to reduce environmental impacts and analyze energy utilization
Prepare budget inputs in conjunction with CFO and identify needed capital investment that supports the long-term mission of the Garden
Oversee security & safety protocols in conjunction with Safety Committee and act as liaison with City of Norfolk Police and Fire & Rescue Departments
Perform facility equipment obsolescent planning, budgeting, and replacement
Perform environmental hazard management/planning and remediation
Manage inventory of essential parts and materials to support routine maintenance of vehicles, tools, equipment, and buildings
As part of senior management, help implement programs and provide team leadership and support NBG’s long term sustainable growth
Other duties as assigned by the President.

Education and Experience 

A high school diploma or GED, along with extensive experience in maintenance and facilities management, is required. The Director of Facilities will have to demonstrate excellent managerial experience and abilities; organization, planning, and communications skills; and knowledge of purchasing, supplies, equipment, and building repair. Experience in managing contractors and capital improvements is a plus.
