Summary: The Botanical Garden Manager is responsible for the proactive management of the New Orleans Botanical Garden, data management, horticulture, and project execution. The role reports to the Director of the Botanical Garden and is supported by Garden and City Park staff.
Work with the Garden Director and Horticulture staff to establish and maintain the Gardens with respect to historical context, overall design, and seasonal horticultural displays.
Creates and manages the Gardens annual horticulture budget and all policies and procedures for the Horticulture staff, in conjunction with the Garden Director.
Advises and sets standards for the protection of the gardens and grounds and facilities for outdoor events, film shoots, art installations, fundraisers, and other programmatic activities.
Execute proactive maintenance and ongoing beautification within the Garden, meeting or exceeding the expectations of a first-class public garden.
Support both short-term and long-term planning and programming, including visitor engagement, horticultural endeavors, exhibitions, educational offerings, research projects, and similar objectives.
Oversee Garden staff responsible for the overall maintenance of plant materials in the Garden and greenhouses including but not limited to watering, pruning, fertilizing, weeding, propagating, and spraying.
Design, select and locate plant materials, oversee installation of plant displays, both seasonal and permanent displays.
Oversee propagation of plant material for use in the garden, the Park and for community engagement events such as plant sales.
Work creatively and resourcefully within a determined budget.
Develop clear and concise project plans and budgets. Read, analyze, and interpret project plans and cost estimates in keeping with organizational goals, budget allotment and long-term objectives.
Plan, organize, and participate in community outreach and engagement including plant sales, garden shows and other special events.
Support park sponsored fundraising events.
Develop and execute a robust volunteer program; ensure productive staff engagement with volunteers.
Execute a data-driven Garden management system; Supervise and implement the electronic records of plants, maps, and blueprints. Assist with the identification of plants, ensure the labeling of all plants. Generate reports as needed.
Manage the accession and de-accession of all plants.
Instill a collaborative and supportive culture amongst team members; ensure a culture of safety.
Other duties as assigned.
Ensure the overall directions, coordination, and evaluation of direct reports.
Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable laws.
Additional supervisory responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, recommending rewards and disciplinary actions when appropriate, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications and education requirements:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in botanical garden, arboretum or similar public garden
Minimum 3 years in a supervisory role
Bachelors degree in horticultural, botanical, ecological, or environmental science or a related discipline
Strong knowledge of native flora, soils, hydrology, and wildlife of Louisiana desired.
