Job Description 

COURSE DESCRIPTION
NTBG’s Fall Internship Program is designed as an excellent work and study opportunity for undergraduate students and high school graduates to gain valuable, practical experience and a broad overview of all aspects of horticultural excellence in a tropical botanical garden set-up. Interns will work side-by-side with staff caring for and learning about tropical plant collections, including native species, endangered species, ornamental species, fruits and crops. The schedule includes on-the-ground introduction and training, and an online academic program consisting of weekly lectures, assignments and interactive discussions with NTBG science and horticulture staff and fellow interns. Themes will include plant identification, international regulations, managing plant collections, plant assessment, propagation, soil sciences, pests and diseases, landscape planning, useful plants and other special collections, plant interactions, conservation, biocultural stewardship and place, and communication. A total of five interns will be hired: one each will be based at each of NTBG’s five gardens in Hawaii and Florida and receive a weekly online training program as a cohort.
Applicants must:
Be a High School graduate or equivalent.
Show an aptitude and strong interest in tropical horticulture, botany, conservation, ethnobotany, or science-related fields with career goals in this direction
Be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. upon start of employment

Interns receive a weekly stipend equivalent to $13.00 per hour. Interns are eligible for certain NTBG benefits and must pass a pre-employment drug screening. Note that interns must provide their own housing and transportation for this program.
