Job Description 

The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) manages the world’s largest living collection of breadfruit, which is located at NTBG’s Kahanu Garden, Maui, and the McBryde Garden, Kauaʻi. The Breadfruit Collection consists of more than 300 accessioned trees representing more than 150 varieties from more than 30 islands in the Pacific, the Seychelles, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Honduras. Some of the varieties are rare or extinct in their native habitat.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden is seeking candidates for the position of Collection Manager. This position will be responsible for management and supporting research and interpretation of an internationally pre-eminent breadfruit conservation collection to the highest curatorial standards. This position is based at Kahanu Garden, Hāna, Maui, with periodic travel to NTBG Headquarters on Kauaʻi to support the Regenerative Organic Breadfruit Agroforestry Demonstration Project and breadfruit collection there.

Duties & Responsibilities 

The successful candidate will represent the National Tropical Botanical Garden to a high standard and be able to work as a proactive team player under minimal supervision, demonstrate initiative, interdepartmental collaboration, and reliability in the pursuit of horticultural excellence and has the following education and/or experience:

Education and Experience 

• Some post secondary training required such as a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture or closely
related field.
• 1-3 years of experience, preferably in public horticulture and proven ability to maintain high horticultural standards. Experience working with tropical and subtropical woody plants is required. Experience with breadfruit or tropical fruit tree management and International Society of Arboriculture certification is a plus.
• Knowledge of horticulture practices, including plant propagation, pest and disease control,
fertilizing, soils, pruning, etc., and experience with a range of propagation methods, including seed germination, grafting, and air-layering required.
•Has, or is able to obtain and maintain, a Hawaii Pesticide Applicator’s license within 3 months of hire. .
• Experience in collecting data and record keeping for horticultural research trials preferred.
• Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google App Suite (ie. Gmail), and the ability to produce reports and work schedules as needed.
