Job Description 

The Trial Garden Assistant is responsible for supporting work in the Trial Garden and other research areas at Mt. Cuba Center. This individual works under the daily supervision of the Research Horticulturist. Duties include garden maintenance, data collection, research assistance and other duties as assigned. We are seeking highly collaborative team members that put our mission first and will help us deliver remarkable experiences to our guests!

Schedule: Generally 16-24 hours per week scheduled over 3-5 days. We can work with the availability & preference of qualified candidates to set a mutually beneficial schedule.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Gardening Maintenance Activities
- Maintain the Trial Garden and research nursery area through a variety of gardening activities, including watering, fertilizing, dead-heading, planting, weeding, pruning and mulching

Research Support Support
- Planning, data collection, and data entry for trials and research
- Assist with record keeping of research plants in support of the Living Collections Policy
- Assist in the production of Trial Garden publications and web content

Assistance in Executing Projects & Events
- Assist in executing projects that support the Trial Garden and Research initiatives through assigned tasks and special event support

Education and Experience 

- Basic gardening skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs to complete work duties
- Strong interest and enthusiasm for gardening
- Ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain a wide range of hand tools, power tools, vehicles and small and large equipment and vehicles
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs to complete work duties
- Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details, and the ability to manage time and effectively function without close supervision
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as needed
- Requires moderate physical work; Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, reaching, carrying, lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 30 pounds
