Job Description 

The Director of Business Operations provides leadership, oversight, and management of the core operative areas of finance, accounting, facilities, infrastructure, and technology services at Mt. Cuba Center. The Director oversees all insurance, risk management, and legal issues, and maintains the non-profit status of the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise accounting functions and staff; Oversee budget development process and organizational budget performance; Evaluate and supervise the development and implementation of financial policies, procedures, workflows, and internal auditing in compliance with GAAP principles.
Direct the preparation of financial statements and related reports for the Board of Managers and Executive Director; Liaise with the chairs of Audit and Investment Committees to keep them informed and facilitate regular committee meetings
Lead the annual budget development process, ensure effective budgetary control, and cash flow throughout the organization
Oversee the performance and maintenance of all buildings and associated infrastructure across Mt. Cuba’s 1,083-acre campus including utilities, driveways and improved parking areas, tenant houses and other outbuildings, and underground water, sewer, electric, and data lines
Lead and supervise facilities staff to provide timely and effective service and maintenance; Oversee maintenance programs for all buildings, roadways and parking lots, and water supply system; ensure legal compliance specific to OSHA and safety requirements for facilities
Lead and supervise technology services team to provide exceptional technology platforms and high-quality IT support services; Oversee system and data security and legal compliance in IT programs and policies
Collaborate with investment consultants and Board of Managers to monitor all institutional investments and grant distributions
Work with legal counsel on behalf of the organization to obtain advice on civil/criminal matters, contract/policy drafting, and other operational matters requiring counsel
Monitor liability throughout the organization and maintain all necessary contracts, inclusive of commercial liability
Lead and supervise capital projects, including budgets and timelines; Coordinate with external contractors, including owners’ reps, architects, landscape architects, construction managers, general contractors, civil engineers, and others as projects require
Recruit, lead, motivate and develop employees who can successfully collaborate with all internal and external constituencies to help achieve the core objectives, inclusive of making all personnel action decisions
Oversee the envisioning, development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies for furthering the achievement of MCC’s overall vision, mission, and program goals, and direct all aspects of the execution of those strategies
Work cooperatively with the management team on adopting and implementing organization-wide systems and help guide and execute the strategic goals of the institution to support Mt. Cuba Center’s mission
Skills:

Proficient knowledge of finance and accounting and GAAP principles
Knowledge of contemporary facilities management practices
Familiarity with information technology systems, platforms, and infrastructure
Knowledge of non-profit financial principles and endowment management
Understanding of accounting processes, financial reporting, and analysis
Proficiency with QuickBooks or other similar accounting software
Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills

Abilities:

Exceptional attention to detail and critical thinking abilities
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs to complete work duties
Sound reasoning and judgment in making practical business decisions
Demonstrated ability in organizing, managing, and motivating others
Ability to effectively fulfill organizational leadership roles and build meaningful partnerships
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong professional relationships and persuasively communicate with Mt. Cuba Center staff and the public
Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details, and the ability to manage time and effectively function without close supervision
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed
FLSA Designation: Exempt

Reports to: Executive Director

Education and Experience 

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in finance, business, or business-related field and 10 years experience in finance, facilities management, and/or information technology, with substantial management experience and professional familiarity with each of these key areas
