The Horticulture Department at Mount Auburn Cemetery is seeking an enthusiastic individual to complete a six-month apprenticeship in 2020. Working under the supervision of the Gardening Supervisor and alongside our knowledgeable horticulture staff, this position will provide training and practical experience to a current student or graduate of an accredited horticulture program or individual with two years of relevant work experience in the horticulture field. The work will include maintaining special area gardens including planting pruning, weeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing and edging of trees, shrubs and ground cover, IPM monitoring and other grounds maintenance tasks as needed. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to learn about automated greenhouse systems in our state of the art Greenhouse. You will also participate in safety training, educational seminars and field trips when offered.
Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated on the Cambridge - Watertown line near Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1831, and now visited by some 200,000 people each year, it is one of the oldest and best preserved landscaped gardens in North America and continues to operate as an active cemetery. Mount Auburn is famous for being the inspiration that led to the American Parks Movement during the 19th century. The horticultural richness of this National Historic Landmark features 5,000 trees and more than 20,000 plants overall, representing 115 different botanical families and comprising more than 2,000 different taxa.
Candidates should have a desire and willingness to expand their existing knowledge of horticulture in a hands-on working experience. The position requires strong communication skills to interact with a diverse group of peers, lot owners and visitors. A valid driver’s license and experience in maintaining trees, shrubs and groundcovers are also required. The physical demands of this position include routinely lifting up to 50 lbs., the ability to use and operate a variety of hand tools such as hand-pruners, handsaws, pole saw and pole pruners. It also requires bending, walking and/or standing for long periods of time outside in all weather conditions and traversing stairs, inclines, declines and uneven terrain. This is a 40-hour per week position with some flexibility regarding the start date. The pay rate is $18 per hour. Housing is not provided by the cemetery.
