Mount Auburn Cemetery is seeking an enthusiastic individual to complete a six-month apprenticeship in our state of the art greenhouse. Working under the supervision of the Greenhouse/Nursery Manager and alongside our knowledgeable horticulture staff, this position will provide practical greenhouse and nursery production experience to a current student or graduate of an accredited horticulture program or an individual with two years of relevant work experience in the horticulture field. You will be involved with the overall operations of the greenhouse and nursery, including production of bedding crops, propagation, IPM, floral decoration and sales. You will also have the opportunity to participate in educational seminars and field trips when offered.
Mount Auburn Cemetery comprises 175 acres and is situated on the Cambridge - Watertown line near Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1831, and now visited by some 200,000 people each year, it is one of the oldest and best preserved landscaped gardens in North America and continues to operate as an active cemetery. Mount Auburn is famous for being the inspiration that led to the American Parks Movement during the 19th century. The horticultural richness of this National Historic Landmark features 5,000 trees and more than 20,000 plants overall, representing 115 different botanical families and comprising more than 2,000 different taxa.
Candidates should have a desire and willingness to expand their existing knowledge in a hands-on working experience. The position requires strong communication skills to interact with a diverse group of peers, lot owners and visitors. A valid driver’s license and proven knowledge of plant propagation, IPM practices and the care of bedding plants and groundcovers are also required. Familiarity with BGBase and Microsoft Office programs is preferred. The physical demands of this position include routinely lifting up to 50 lbs., the ability to use and operate a variety of hand tools such as hand-held sprayers, shovels, rakes and hand-pruners. It also requires bending, walking and/or standing for long periods of time on concrete floors, traversing stairs, inclines, declines and uneven terrain and working outside in all weather conditions. This is a 40-hour per week position paying $18 per hour. The start date is negotiable. Housing is not provided by the Cemetery.
