Job Description 

The University of Michigan, Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum is looking for one part-time (60%) Facilities Assistant. The Facilities Assistant will report to the Facilities Manager and will help with the development, maintenance and management of our buildings, hardscapes and grounds to support teaching, research, public outreach, and conservation goals. This position is 24 hours per week, Monday through Friday with occasional weekend and evening responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities 

*Inspection and monitoring of buildings, infrastructure, systems, hardscapes and grounds
*Student intern oversight and scheduling grounds work (Mowing, aeration, trash collection, trimming, weeding)
*Routine cleaning and organizing, power washing, painting, and light repairs
*Assist with on-site coordination with Plant Operations personnel
*Minor construction, carpentry, general repairs and landscaping.
*Maintain a variety of building systems and equipment.
*Lead student interns, work-study students, and volunteers.
*Will be asked to work in multiple conditions and tolerate the physical challenges of working on building systems, in greenhouses and outdoors.
*Ability to move or transport up to 40lbs.
*Snow removal and winter grounds maintenance.

Education and Experience 

*Highschool diploma or higher, or equivalent combination of education and experience
*Experience in any of the following industries: construction, building services, transportation and infrastructure, environmental health and safety, horticulture, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or public gardens.
*A valid Driver's License and ability to pass a motor vehicle record (MVR) check is required
