Job Description

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in beautiful Sarasota, Florida has an immediate opening on their Horticulture team for an experienced Greenhouse Horticulturist. Nestled on subtropical Sarasota Bay, Selby Gardens is the most biologically diverse botanical garden, per acre, in the world. The glasshouse collection of approximately 13,000 specimens contains the world’s largest scientifically documented collection of epiphytes- plants that live in the tree canopy- including orchids, bromeliads, aroids, gesneriads, ferns, and many other groups of exotic plants. Candidates will be responsible for the complete care of a portion of these priceless living collections in a 25,000 sq. ft. greenhouse complex, and will work directly with the Director of Glasshouse Collections, who has more than 25 years of experience in the field. The ideal candidate will work alongside other Horticulturists on collections care and changing exhibition development and implementation, will supervise a team of dedicated volunteers, and will interact with visiting scientists. Additionally, this position will be provided both local and international field expedition opportunities. Other duties include plant propagation, accurately maintaining plant records, monitoring greenhouse systems, managing greenhouse sanitation, and providing media and educational content on request.

This is an exciting and dynamic time to be a member of the Selby Gardens team, as we are embarking on a $98 million Master Plan (which will include a new greenhouse and displayhouse complex), and have recently adopted another local institution, Historic Spanish Point which will create an additional campus for Selby Gardens. The successful candidate will be flexible, productive, accountable, manage their time and resources well, maintain strict quality controls, and be a team player. Education and experience requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture or related field preferred, minimum of 3 years experience in greenhouse/nursery production required, tropical horticulture and experience with epiphytes is strongly desired, advanced understanding of correct horticultural practices and experience in all aspects of routine garden maintenance, solid plant identification knowledge is preferred, must hold a valid Florida Pesticide Applicators License, or be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
