Longwood Gardens is seeking a self-motivated, dynamic individual for the position of Research Specialist, Nursery and Plant Trials in the Research and Conservation Division of our Horticulture Department.
Primary research responsibilities include management of the Longwood Research Nursery and Plant Trials Program. Research responsibilities include: implementing, analyzing and disseminating meaningful research projects related to plant culture, breeding and conservation, and management of a Plant Evaluation and Trials Program (Hardy and non-hardy plants). Research nursery management and collections curation responsibilities include: managing of all aspects of Longwood Gardens 5-acre Research Nursery and serving as Curator of at least one Longwood Core Collection including guiding the process of Plant Collections Network accreditation for the collection.
Qualifications include a BS or MS degree in horticulture, botany or related field with at least 2 years of nursery, greenhouse or plant evaluation and trials experience; extensive knowledge of ornamental plant taxonomy, propagation and culture; excellent management, organizational, observation and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail; and proven written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge and experience. We also require the willingness and ability to represent Longwood through membership in professional associations and to travel abroad and participate in plant exploration. A valid driver’s license is required; experience with BG-Base or another plant records database systems is a plus.
