Longwood Gardens, one of the great gardens of the world located in Kennett Square, PA is seeking a full-time Horticulturist for the Outdoor Landscape Division. The Horticulturist will join a skilled team that manages part of Longwood’s historic landscape, including Flower Garden Walk, Compartment Gardens and Peirce’s Woods. This part of the garden offers a unique opportunity to work with an array of hardy and annuals plants from around the world to create seasonal, evolving, aesthetically pleasing spaces for guests to enjoy.
Responsibilities include maintaining and evolving the landscapes around the Terrace Restaurant and Peirce du Pont House to a high level of horticultural excellence; supporting other team members with seasonal maintenance; supervising and training staff, students, and volunteers on horticultural practices and involvement in other projects across the organization.
This individual must have the ability to perform a full range of horticultural tasks and duties with minimum guidance, including weeding, mulching, maintaining & designing all-year round container displays and pruning of various climbers and hedges. We are looking for a strong team player with a flexible mindset and the ability to prioritize, plan and lead the maintenance and evolution of the landscapes around the Terrace Restaurant and Pierce du Pont House, engage with guests while working in these areas, and work independently and with a wide range of people in a larger team. The garden areas at Terrace Restaurant and the Peirce du Pont House are two of our most frequented spaces and include dining facilities, concession stands, seasonal music events and children railway displays. This position requires balancing individual responsibilities for these areas in a timely fashion with the need to provide support to other team’s seasonal and maintenance responsibilities throughout the section as a strong and reliable team player. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to articulate and share Longwood’s mission both within and outside the organization.
Minimum requirements include 2 years of formal horticultural education or training and 2 years of gardening or landscape maintenance experience in public garden or private estate. Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license, forklift operator’s training certificate, and aerial lift training. The position requires small equipment operator skills, including tractors, and the work schedule includes weekend, evening and holiday work. This position requires bending, stooping, the ability to lift at least 50 pounds, integrated pest management, and working from ladders & aerial lifts.
