Longwood Gardens seeks a Director, Outdoor Landscapes, with proven leadership to lead a talented team of globally recognized horticulture professionals in the Outdoor Landscapes Division. The Director, Outdoor Landscapes, will ensure that Longwood’s outdoor display gardens and landscapes continue to meet extraordinary horticultural display standards of excellence while helping to drive innovative thinking. The Outdoor Landscapes Division is one of four divisions in the Horticulture Department and consists of 18 full-time staff and 15 part-time staff, as well as numerous volunteers and students.
Internationally recognized for innovative, dynamic horticultural displays, our outdoor gardens consist of both formal and informal gardens and landscapes designed by Longwood’s Founder Pierre S. du Pont and some of the greatest landscape and garden designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The gardens incorporate intensively managed permanent; tree, shrub and herbaceous plantings of both native and non-native taxa punctuated with large annual beds that change with the planned display seasons. The person in this role will be arriving at a pivotal moment. Longwood has just embarked on the most ambitious capital project in a century, Longwood Reimagined: A New Garden Experience. We seek a dynamic leader who has demonstrated the ability to think strategically and work in a fast-paced, highly creative, and collaborative environment across a multidisciplinary organization. The Director, Outdoor Landscapes, will provide leadership to an empowered team of gardeners with an aim to create and maintain Longwood’s outdoor gardens and landscapes to the highest standards of horticultural excellence. The Outdoor Landscape team is supported by the Horticulture design staff on all aspects of aesthetics related to the garden. The ability to think critically and experience in managing complex budgets and projects is required. An understanding of resilient landscapes is helpful. Longwood Gardens has a culture of long-term planning and regular refinement to a visionary master site plan that provides a roadmap for development, improvement, and amplification of the gardens. The Director, Outdoor Landscapes will participate in the evolution and implementation of the master site plan.
The ideal candidate will possess formal training in Horticulture or a related field and have a minimum of ten years of experience in Horticulture with a minimum of five years in a strategic and applied leadership capacity. A strong track record with managing outdoor landscapes is required. Knowledge of greenhouse operations helpful. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated a strong aesthetic sense in previous horticultural work and have knowledge of a wide palette of plants, including hardy in Zone 6b. Experience with understanding the constructability of landscape projects and managing small landscape construction projects is necessary. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include but are not limited to excellent verbal communication, including public speaking, strong interpersonal skills, professional writing skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
