The department of Biology in Penn Arts & Sciences operates a greenhouse, gardens, and growth chambers to support teaching and research endeavors of Penn faculty and students. James G. Kaskey Memorial Park includes the BioPond and is open to the public year round; enjoyed by Penn faculty, staff, students and community members. It provides a green respite in the midst of an urban setting. Local classrooms also benefit from visiting the gardens for learning opportunities.
Currently the department has a position open for an experienced Garden and Greenhouse Manager who will be responsible for the oversight and effective operations of the greenhouse, gardens, and growth chambers of the Biology department. The Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all systems are functioning efficiently, troubleshooting, and engaging appropriate resources for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of all facilities. The Manager will also contribute to long-term planning for the gardens, research projects, and outreach.
The manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the garden and greenhouses including planning plantings, overseeing the care of trees, weeding, pruning, pest management, pond care, and general upkeep. In support of the projects and activities of the garden, the Manager supervises two full time staff and hires seasonal workers on an as-needed basis. The manager is expected to share the hands-on responsibility for all areas and be able to assess the needs of the facilities, troubleshoot a variety of problems, and engage appropriate professionals as needed.
BA/BS in horticulture, greenhouse management, or closely related field with 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required, preferably in a research setting. Experience managing gardens and/or greenhouses strongly preferred. Strong troubleshooting and organizational skills required. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff. Previous experience directly supervising employees required. Must have experience managing resources. Strong diplomatic communication skills a must. Must have or obtain and keep current pesticide application certification. Must be able to operate a small tractor.
