The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens seeks an innovative, strategic, and collaborative professional to lead the Education Division's extensive educational and public programs.
The Huntington is a collections-based research and educational institution serving scholars, students, and the general public. It is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supported by gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and by government grants, and by a private endowment that provides about 40 percent of the annual operating budget. In the almost 100 years since The Huntington was founded, the collections have grown impressively. Today the Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens are world renowned for their breadth and depth and the degree to which those collections are interpreted, through robust programming, for diverse audiences. As the institution celebrates its Centennial and shifts into its second hundred years, the commitment to its public impact and focus has never been greater.
The mission of the Division of Education and Public Programs is to use The Huntington's unique art, botanical, and library collections to teach an understanding and appreciation of the arts, humanities, and botanical science among existing and new audiences, from school children and their teachers to life-long learners.
The Nadine and Robert A. Skotheim Director of Education and Public Programs reports directly to the President of The Huntington, serving as a member of the President's Senior Staff, which works as a team to advise the President on the management of the institution. The Director works collaboratively with the directors and curators of the three collection-based divisions—Library, Art, and Botanical—the Education staff, as well as volunteer docents, to encourage understanding of the humanities, arts, and nature through engagement with The Huntington's extraordinary collections. The Director will be responsible for shaping an innovative and ambitious vision for The Huntington's wide-ranging informal and formal learning experiences, supervising three associate directors who oversee school programs and partnerships, volunteers, and public programs. The Director also acts as the senior staff representative on the Board of Governors Education and Volunteers Committee.
The successful candidate will demonstrate an enthusiasm for the uniqueness of The Huntington as a holistic enterprise that supports scholarship and education across its collections, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues and constituencies to provide transformative experiences for the public. The Huntington's programs serve a broad audience and provide enrichment for Members, casual visitors, adults, families, and children. More formally, Huntington educators work in close partnership with teachers, offering a number of different school programs free of charge that are held during public hours and are led by highly trained docents who guide students in interactive explorations of The Huntington's collections. As many as 500 teachers a year participate in professional development activities that feature scholarly lectures and curriculum development. Approximately 50 percent of client schools come from the Los Angeles and Pasadena Unified School Districts. A recent survey indicated that more than 70 percent of the schools were federally designated “Title I" schools. More than 25,000 students visit annually to take part in these programs.

The Director of Education and Public Programs' responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Develops the Education Division's direction and vision for The Huntington's extensive education and public programs and ensures high-quality programming that meets community expectations and sets national standards;
• Collaborates with Senior Staff colleagues in the development of new programs, in alignment with institutional priorities and strategic goals;
• Works with Advancement colleagues to identify prospective funding sources for educational initiatives;
• Manages and supports Education staff members, including twelve full-time employees and seven part-time and on-call employees;
• Oversees the training and management of The Huntington's 1,500 volunteers, including its 350 docents who perform vital services in each collecting area of the institution;
• Seeks opportunities to reach out to larger audiences and to raise the profile of The Huntington's collections;
• Leads staff in setting and prioritizing individual and department-wide goals;
• Oversees, contributes to, and supports Education staff in developing the content of educational programs, events, publications, and online resources;
• Oversees and actively participates in program and event delivery and evaluation;
• Plans and oversees the Education Division budget; and
• Fosters a positive and collaborative environment within the Education division.

• Passion for and commitment to the mission of The Huntington;
• Master's degree in Education, Museum Education, or an advanced degree in a relevant field required;
• Strong leadership and excellent interpersonal skills;
• Excellent communication skills and collaborative managerial style;
• Familiarity with using digital educational tools and digital humanities practices to reach diverse audiences of learners;
• Demonstrated creativity in design and delivery of education and programming;
• Proven ability to effectively supervise staff and contribute to a positive and healthy work environment;
• Demonstrated ability to pioneer new ways to connect with diverse audiences;
• Extensive experience in the field of education, museum education, or a related academic discipline;
• Supervisory experience;
• Demonstrated ability to apply the latest technology in enhancing educational access to collections, especially as related to interpretation, web-based learning, and the digital humanities;
• Previous experience working with and/or supervising volunteers desirable; and
• Proven record of attracting and retaining diverse audiences within a cultural institution setting.
