The mission of the Houston Botanic Garden is to enrich life through discovery, education, and conservation of plants and the natural environment.
New for 2021, the Garden will present BotaniCamp, an eight-week, plant-centric nature camp for K-5 students. The sensory and enquiry-driven curriculum will present many opportunities to go beyond just observation. Each week's theme will help campers connect with plants through thoughtful and diverse lessons and hands-on activities.
Campers will plant, grow, and interact with natural environments while working with scientists and experts.
The Garden is seeking two seasonal, part-time camp teachers for BotaniCamp. Camp runs Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., from June 14-August 6, 2021. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, experienced educators comfortable teaching a variety of STEAM topics to K-5 students. All camps will be held outdoors, and the Garden requires masks for all visitors over the age of 10, as well as employees and volunteers.
Schedule and Salary:
• Compensation is $20/hour. The anticipated start date is June 1.
These part-time (up to 29 hours/week) non-exempt positions will be responsible for class preparation; teaching and assisting with classes and daily activities; ensuring the safety and physical well-being of campers; maintaining daily communication with parents; gathering and inputting feedback for weekly reports; and working with the Garden's education department to provide a high-quality summer camp experience.
Teachers are expected to arrive at7:00 a.m. and work through 12:30 p.m. each day.
• Bachelor's degree in education or natural sciences preferred
• Experience in youth education, summer camp, and/or youth program
• Bilingual highly desirable
